Trainings for Lay Leaders

The Rocky Mountain Conference encourages interested lay persons to pursue theological education and formal training for lay leadership. Below, we’ve listed a handful of providers and programs that offer these kinds of learning opportunities:

Leading Together: Foundations for Congregational Leadership — August 17th & 25th, 2026 (via Zoom)

This two-session introductory course explores the role of moderators and congregational leadership, why congregational leadership is different from other leadership contexts, and how to navigate the relational and interpersonal dynamics that come with the work. Through real-life scenarios, peer learning, and frameworks, participants will gain greater clarity about their role and leave with tools they can begin using immediately. This workshop is designed as an introduction to congregational leadership. The first session will focus specifically on the role of the church moderator, while the second session will focus on developing frameworks for conflict resolution and unique church challenges. Additional workshops on topics such as communication, conflict, meetings, change leadership, and congregational systems will be offered separately later on in 2026 and 2027. Registration for Leading Together will open in mid-July.

After this workshop, participants will:

  • Better understand the role and responsibilities of congregational leaders.
  • Recognize the unique opportunities and challenges of leadership in congregational settings.
  • Learn frameworks for approaching common leadership situations and decisions.
  • Gain a shared language for discussing governance, relationships, and leadership dynamics.
  • Feel more prepared to step into leadership.
