Celebrating 5 Years of CCG

On July 18th, Sixth Avenue lead pastor, Rev. Chris Gilmore, co-chaired the 5 year anniversary action of Coloradans for Common Good (CCG), a broad-based community organizing group in Denver.  Sixth Avenue is a founding member of CCG and over the past five years, they have been a part of helping make the Denver Metro Area a more compassionate and just place for its citizens. A few highlights of the last five years include:

  • Standing with DCTA (Denver Classroom Teachers Assc.) and won a 15% raise for Denver Teachers
  • Won a $20 minimum wage for Denver para-professionals and $18 minimum wage for JeffCo Education Support Professionals – some of the highest in the country
  • Secured $20 million in additional broadband for rural communities and led a NATIONAL change to Comcast’s application for reduced cost internet to make it accessible for immigrant families
  • Ensured thousands of JeffCo Students stayed fed during the pandemic
  • Stopped a whole building eviction in Arvada and pushed the city to create an affordable housing task force
  • Won pandemic workplace protections for 50,000 grocery store workers throughout the state and meat packing plant workers in Greeley
  • Pushed the city to put $30 million into emergency rental assistance – protecting 6000 families from eviction!
  • And changed city law to help the Denver Auditor investigate bad employers who steal wages and take advantage of our most vulnerable workers!

As part of the action on the 18th, over 300 people from over 30 different institutions including churches, synagogues, unions, NAACP chapters, and other non-profits from around the area pledged to raise more money for more organizers in northern Colorado, Boulder county, and Adams county.   To learn more about what’s on the horizon for CCG and to join in their efforts, please visit the CCG website.
