The questioning of deeply held\, “common sense” values can be painful and doubt-inducing work\, but ultimately opens us to embrace collective wisdom\, to nurture strong and resourceful communities\, and to live faithfully without certainty or superiority. \nReflecting on nearly a quarter century of teaching students at Iliff\, Katherine will tell the story of how being challenged by esteemed colleagues to uncover the white supremacy at the heart of her academic discipline led to a journey of questioning everything she thought she was supposed to be doing as a seminary professor\, forming Christian ministers. A commitment to listen and to learn with humility fuels the ongoing process of unbinding from the legacy of whiteness while still being accountable to what it has wrought. \nKatherine Turpin joined Iliff’s faculty in June 2002. She also currently serves as Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment and Director of the MDiv program. Born in Watts during the 1980s—a time marked by poverty\, displacement\, and the impacts of gang and drug violence—Norice carries the resilience of his early environment into every creative endeavor. What began as a childhood coping mechanism has grown into a lifelong artistic practice spanning more than 40 years. \nIn 2017\, Norice founded Artfully United\, a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to revitalizing underserved neighborhoods through community-centered murals. His installations—bearing uplifting messages such as FORGIVENESS\, LOVE\, HOPE\, and BELIEVE—are offered as gifts to the communities that shaped him. Together\, we’ll explore powerful stories of hope\, healing\, and action—each rooted in a shared vision of justice and liberation. \nGod’s Provision in the Midst of an Ungrateful Nation: An Open Thank-You Note to Black Women Everywhere \nOn the day following Resurrection Sunday\, this talk will explore how Jesus’s provision for his Mother Mary at the foot of the cross serves as a reminder of the redemptive power of gratitude. It will call for corporate repentance for the greatest sin of all committed against Black Women and other “least[s] of these”. \nReverend Allison Cannady-Smith is an ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and the proud Pastor of Shorter Community AME Church in Denver\, CO – the first woman appointed to the position in the church’s 158-year history. As Pastor of Shorter AME\, Rev Cannady-Smith also serves as Lead Pastor\, Finance Chair\, and Trustee Chair of the broader Mountain Valley District of the AME Church\, which boasts 21 churches throughout Colorado\, Arizona\, New Mexico\, Utah\, and Wyoming. Prior to her appointment to Shorter AME\, Rev. Cannady-Smith led Bethel AME Church in Portland\, OR\, and served as Board Chair of the Bethel Economic Development Council. \nIn addition to her clergy calling\, Rev. Cannady-Smith has a wealth of business development and non-profit management experience. A graduate of the Wharton School of Business\, Rev. Cannady-Smith spent more than 30 years in senior non-profit leadership roles where she was responsible for fund development and board governance. She is CEO and Chief Coaching Officer of Cannady Smith & Associates\, a consulting and coaching firm she founded with husband Gregory Robert Smith that advises executives and their teams on strategic planning and people development\, mainly in the educational and healthcare spaces. Rev. Cannady-Smith received her Master of Divinity from Seattle University and her Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. \nA firm believer that faith without hand-to-the-plow practice is dormant\, Rev. Cannady-Smith has been an active community servant. She is a staunch advocate for health equity and frequently serves as a consultant\, facilitator\, lecturer\, and panelist for nonprofits and medical organizations on the importance of cultural competency in the delivery of healthcare. She serves on the board of Pink Lemonade Project\, and was a founding member of FaithHealth in Action and Leaders in Women’s Health\, grassroots coalitions of nonprofits focused on addressing the racial\, economic\, and social determinants of health in the Black and Latinx communities. Plan for an experiential evening. \nLamont Collins used to love arguing with his teammates about who the best professional athletes were. He often took the side of Black players like Bill Russell in these debates\, and his white friends would sometimes come back days later saying things like\, “I talked to my dad\, and he said Bill Russell’s pretty good.” That’s when Lamont Collins realized\, at just nine or ten years old\, how important it was to tell his story. \nToday\, telling Black stories is exactly what he continues to do as the founder and CEO of Roots 101 African American Museum in downtown Louisville. He named it Roots 101 because\, in higher education\, the first class you take is 101. The museum serves as an educational journey from Africa to America. \nMr. Collins never really planned to start a museum. For decades\, he was simply a collector with an impressive set of artifacts. The first item in that collection came courtesy of his mother\, who worked at the local Armed Forces examination bureau. When a young Cassius Clay\, later known as Muhammad Ali\, showed up at the office\, she obtained an autograph for her son. DESCRIPTION:April 21-22nd\, 2026: Racial Justice for Authorized Ministers – Foundations \n\n\nThis workshop is designed for Authorized Ministers who have not had racial justice training within the past 3 years and is recommended to Associations that require racial justice training. \nContent includes: \n\nA broad\, but not comprehensive\, introduction to race as a concept\, racism and its various forms\, and various forms of working toward racial justice. Particular attention is paid to Christian foundations for racism and the history of slavery and colonization in New England.\nParticipants will give attention to understanding themselves racially and unpack the stories their ministry settings tell in terms of race. This workshop utilizes facilitated caucus spaces for white people and people of color to discuss and explore their unique experiences of racialization.\nReflection on how the power Authorized Ministers wield as individuals and with their ministry settings can be utilized for racial justice.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstand and articulate four realms of racism\nRecognize the role of Christianity as a foundation and expression of racism\nGain insight into oneself as a racialized person and the racialization of your ministry setting\nIdentify forms of power available within your ministry setting and possibilities for action for racial justice\n\nLearning takes place both as an individual and as a leader within your setting \nThis training includes required pre-work\, both reading and engaging in a response. Earlier offerings of this training included a dense history section in a primarily lecture format. Responding to participant feedback\, we are shifting that material to pre-reading so that we can focus training time on digesting this material and making it relevant to you and your ministry setting. Your attention to the pre-work will affect your and your colleagues’ learning\, so making adequate time for this work is appreciated. You will receive detailed instructions about this assignment about one month prior to the training date. \nThis is an interactive workshop that requires active participation throughout\, including through self-reflection and writing\, small group discussion\, and large group engagement.  Please be sure you are in a setting that allows for this.  Please note\, attendance and participation in the full session is required to receive a certificate. \nRegistration closes on April 16\, 2026 or once all spots have been filled. Cancellations or refunds must be requested before the close of registration. \nThe standard cost of this program is $230. Dr. Serene Jones \n_____________________________________________________\nThe First Congregational Church of Colorado Springs is thrilled to present Rev. Dr.\nSerene Jones as our guest lecturer at the annual JWW Lectureship Series in spring\n2026. Please join us for lectures and conversation throughout the weekend\, April 24-26\,\n2026.\nA highly respected scholar and public intellectual\, the Rev. Dr. Serene Jones is the 16th\nPresident of the historic Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. The first\nwoman to head the 186-year-old institution\, Jones occupies the Johnston Family Chair\nfor Religion and Democracy. She is a Past President of the American Academy of\nReligion\, which annually hosts the world’s largest gathering of scholars of religion.\nJones came to Union after seventeen years at Yale University\, where she was the Titus\nStreet Professor of Theology at the Divinity School\, and Chair of the University’s\nProgram in Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She is the author of several books\nincluding Trauma and Grace and\, most recently\, her memoir Call It Grace: Finding\nMeaning in a Fractured World. Jones\, a popular public speaker\, is sought by media to\ncomment on major issues impacting society because of her deep grounding in theology\,\npolitics\, women’s studies\, economics\, race studies\, history\, and ethics.\nThis year’s JWW Lectureship Series is hosted in partnership with UCCS’ Center for\nReligious Diversity and Public Life.
