DESCRIPTION:We are honored to welcome Dr. Erica Chenoweth (they\, them) as our 2026 MacKenzie Lecturer. At a time when democracy faces unprecedented challenges and civil rights are under threat\, Dr. Chenoweth’s research offers vital insight into how ordinary people can create extraordinary change through nonviolent action. \nInternationally recognized for groundbreaking work on civil resistance\, Dr. Chenoweth is known for articulating the “3.5% rule” – the principle\, grounded in rigorous analysis of hundreds of movements worldwide\, that no regime has withstood the active\, nonviolent participation of at least 3.5% of its population. Their scholarship offers not only political wisdom but moral imagination and a vision for a more just and compassionate future. \nDr. Chenoweth serves as Academic Dean for Faculty Development and Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. They are also the first openly non-binary faculty dean at Harvard University. During their graduate years at the University of Colorado\, where they earned both a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Political Science\, Erica was actively engaged at First Congregational Church\, making this homecoming especially meaningful. \nRSVP Required! The Metropolitan Denver Association of the Rocky Mountain Conference UCC has approved a “Share the Love” process for distributing budgeted funds as well as an increase in contributions to the MDA. The Executive Committee would like to see proposals for the use of these funds in support of common goals. You can learn more by checking out the application form via this link. \nFebruary is the month for application submission. If you have a proposal likely to work toward those goals (which are listed in the application document) and if you are associated with an MDA church\, please use the form on the second page to apply. If more space is needed\, attach additional pages. \nApplications should be sent by email to the MDA grant point person (John Evans-Klock\nat evansklockjohn@aol.com) or the MDA treasurer (Jan Hepp at janhepp8218@gmail.com) by February 28th. Applications will be accepted outside this period\, if submitted at l east one month in advance\, but in all likelihood\, no funds will remain outside that time frame. How we use language in our worship music and liturgy matters in welcoming all people and communicating our understanding that God loves all people and seeks the well-being of everyone regardless of their identities. In this session\, sociologist and hymnwriter Amanda Udis-Kessler will draw on trainings she has previously offered to UCCMA and UCC congregations to consider why inclusive language is so important and how we might center it in our music programming. \n \nDr. Amanda Udis-Kessler is a sociologist\, antiracism trainer\, church musician\, and sacred music composer/hymnwriter who serves as Director of DEI and Member Education on the UCCMA Board. She offers inclusive liturgy training to churches through her website https://equippingthepropheticchurch.com. Her book Cultural Processes of Inequality: A Sociological Perspective was published by Anthem Press in 2024. Be inspired by music grounded in various protest and resistance movements. Sing songs that will encourage and liberate the minds\, bodies\, and souls of everyone. (Freedom songs have the power to transform both the oppressed and the oppressor.) \nYou will be inspired by Daniel Klawitter\, Morgan Lowe\, Christine Ware\, and Eric McEuen; grounded by percussionist Jacqui Shumway; and led by Daryl Walker and Caran Ware Joseph. \nListen to powerful music or join in the singing and drumming with us. No experience is necessary. \nBr. Daniel Klawitter serves as Director of Enrollment at Iliff School of Theology and is an accomplished poet and the singer/lyricist for the indie folk/rock band Mining for Rain. All of his band’s music is available for free or name-your-price streaming and download on their Bandcamp site. \nMorgan Lowe: As a graduate of CU-Boulder with a BA in English Literature\, Morgan Lowe has always been interested in stories – reading\, writing\, or interpreting a narrative that expresses and illuminates. Whether we are performing our own original material or paying homage to the works of other great artists\, the best way we can communicate our story is through our voice\, our heart\, and our art. \nLowe’s distinctive journey of self-discovery through songwriting\, artist development\, music business\, voice lessons\, and vocal teacher training has empowered her to step into her own light and story\, and ignited her passion to help others do the same. \nMorgan was encouraged as a child to love and listen to a wide variety of music\, resulting in a blend of pop\, rock\, jazz\, and blues that influences her today. Morgan currently performs with several top dance bands in Denver\, including Stone Beat Invasion\, Tunisia\, and Jacob Larson Band. She also writes and performs original music with her project The Gilded Lilies. \nEric McEuen is a musician and singer whose work draws on theological studies (Pacific School of Religion)\, a BA in music (Brandeis University)\, and decades of experience performing and songleading in various settings. Since arriving in Denver in 2015\, he has supported many communities and gatherings\, from ecumenical services and protest marches to numerous events at Iliff. Eric is currently Minister of Music and Community at The Land UMC (Aurora)\, Worship Music Director at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (Broomfield)\, and a regular musician at Living Waters Community Church (Denver). He is also a performing songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and music teacher. \nJacqui Shumway is Owner/Director and Therapeutic Kinesiologist & Instructor for the Tai Chi Project at the Living Younger Longer Institute. Jacqui has two ways of describing how she ministers. \nThe “professional/grown-up answer?” I help people learn how to take care of their bodies (and their mindful spirits) so they can live healthier lives – specifically through the Chinese Five Excellences and Traditional Chinese Medicine. \nThe “fun/kid answer?” I put the fun back in education and learning… through AMP- Art\, Music\, and Physical fitness. “What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it’s all about?” \nDaryl Jerome Walker\, Sacred Music Theologian\, brings depth\, breadth\, and height to today’s gathering. He is professionally trained\, spiritually led\, and personally engaged in music and worship arts. \nMinister Walker\, as he is known\, possesses a Master of Divinity (M.Div) from Iliff School of Theology. His academic focus on Social Justice and Ethics guides his practice as a Sacred Music Theologian. \nHe has served as the minister of music for several decades. Former Director of The Spirituals Project\, housed at the Lamont School of Music. His service also includes co-leadership of No Enemies\, a local Denver group that combines social activism and music. He serves as Minister of Music and Worship at Park Hill United Methodist Church. \nChristine Ware is a Lyric Soprano and holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado\, Boulder. An Air Force brat who has lived in several States and Germany\, she has called the Denver area home for the last 50 years.
